Nelson Diaz: The Latest Victim of Internet Memes
One day you’re posting a vacation picture of used bounce house yourself, just standing on the beach and within 48 hours, you find people posting that photo, plus a little Photoshop manipulation and BING! you’re a viral internet meme. This was the unfortunate fate of the next digital victim, Nelson Diaz. This isn’t something you’ll find on Buzzfeed, or BoredPanda… yet. It was a simple Facebook post from Nelson Diaz. He was standing on the beach. No one was photobombing him. There was nothing in the background that would place him into the ongoing “you’ll know when you see it” meme series. He just has mean, vindictive friends (JK—he’s an animator and illustrator, so you know how those people are when a photo presents an opportunity for fun and humor!). Actually, as we have all done this to friends with love, of course, Nelson’s friends showed an outpouring of love and admiration and within 48 hours, people had posted over 150 digitally manipulated photo memes of Nelson, striking a simple pose as he had on some beach somewhere, but now in some odd and embarrassing places and situations. It was better than any thread of Facebook birthday wishes! Some are better than others, and we won’t post all of them. It shows some people are better at Photoshop than others—or maybe some people won’t dedicate several hours to creating a simple visual joke. The difference between a good chuckle and OCD obsession to create an image shared by millions. Let this be a lesson to all who believe they can post a picture of that upcoming family Thanksgiving dinner in a couple of weeks, and not end up having grandma become a sexual icon meme the following day.
